Is USDT safe?

Tether's USDT is the oldest stablecoin still standing, and its Solana deployment at mint Es9vMFrzaCERmJfrF4H2FYD4KCoNkY11McCe8BenwNYB carries about $3.84 billion of market capitalization and 2.3 million holders as of the October 6, 2026 snapshot, with roughly $32.6 million of tracked pool liquidity on this chain. That last number is worth a second look: it is an order of magnitude thinner than USDC's Solana pools in the same snapshot, because most USDT depth lives on exchanges and other chains rather than in Solana AMMs. For everyday swaps it is plenty; for very large exits on-chain, the route quality is worth checking before you size up.

Like every fiat-backed stablecoin, USDT keeps its issuance and freeze powers live — Tether mints against inflows, burns against redemptions, and freezes addresses at law-enforcement request, something it does routinely and publicly. A scanner that flags "active authorities" on USDT is reporting the truth but misreading the genre: for this asset class those powers are the mechanism, and the real question is who wields them. With Tether, that question has a longer and more contested history than with any competitor — years of debate over reserve composition, a 2021 CFTC settlement over historical reserve claims, and quarterly attestations rather than full audits. Billions of people effectively shrug at this daily; you should at least do it knowingly.

What USDT has that no critic can argue away is survival and liquidity gravity: it has traded through every crypto winter since 2014 and remains the quote currency of most of the world's crypto volume. What it doesn't have is the thing no stablecoin has — immunity from its issuer.
