How to trade Solana meme coins

The scans, the sizing math, and the exit rules — a procedure for trading memecoins that survives the trade actually going wrong.

Trading playbook · updated September 2026 · not financial advice

Nobody needs another lecture on why memecoins are dangerous — you already know they can go to zero. What most traders actually lack is the operating procedure: the four checks to run before entry, the position math that survives a bad trade, and the exit rules that keep a winner from round-tripping. This is that procedure, built on what our launch ledger sees every day.

Scan before you buy

The 30-second check that filters out most of the field — paste the mint address.

Step one: scan, or don't trade

Every memecoin trade starts with the same question — can this token even betray you mechanically? Three on-chain flags answer most of it: a live mint authority lets the deployer print supply into the pool you're buying; a live freeze authority lets them lock your tokens after you buy; unlocked liquidity lets them pull the pool itself. Any one of the three is a complete answer — you do not proceed. Launchpad tokens get partial credit here: pump.fun issues coins with both authorities revoked at birth, which makes the flags table stakes there rather than a distinction — the differentiator moves to concentration and the deployer's record.

That record matters more than any single flag. On September 4, 2026, roughly 65% of the day's captured launches — out of 28,959 — came from wallets that minted five or more tokens that same day. A wallet shipping five tokens a day is a production line, and its prior launches' endings are the review section: a deployer whose last ten tokens all died at zero within hours is telling you what this one does.

Position math that survives the trade

Memecoin liquidity is thin in a way most traders misjudge. Selling 1% of a pool doesn't cost you 1% — constant-product pricing makes the exit worse the bigger your share of the pool. If your position is 5% of the liquidity depth, market-selling the whole thing walks the price down the curve and you receive meaningfully less than the last printed price. Before entering, divide your intended exit size by the pool depth; if the number is uncomfortable, the position is too big or the pool is too thin.

Sizing discipline is the unglamorous edge. A trade that can return 10x and realistically hits zero a third of the time is sized so that the zero doesn't change your week. Nobody's risk budget survives "all-in on a coin with $15k of liquidity," and the ledger says most launches never accumulate even that.

Reading the chart like a launch

The first minutes of a launch are the most manipulated segment of the chart — bundlers and snipers are already positioned before the pool is public. A candle that prints vertical on the first block is often one wallet, not a crowd. Watch for what organic looks like instead: multiple independent buys, liquidity that stays or grows, holders accumulating in a distribution rather than concentrating. Our own capture layer logged 35,663 new Solana launches on September 1, 2026; on a firehose that size, the filter isn't "which looks hot" — it's "which survived the first hour without the deployer leaving."

The exit is the trade

Entries get all the attention; exits decide the P&L. A workable default on a volatile memecoin: recover principal early (sell enough to be freerolling), scale out on the way up in fixed tranches rather than waiting for a top you'll never see printed, and treat a liquidity pull or a deployer wallet moving as an unconditional exit — not a dip. A token you can't sell is worth zero regardless of what the chart says, which is why the scan's freeze-flag check is also an exit-readiness check: if the authority to freeze your account is live, your exit exists only at the issuer's discretion.

Run the exit-readiness check

Freeze authority live means your sell button exists at someone else’s discretion — check it first.

Frequently asked

Is trading Solana meme coins profitable?

For most people, no — the base rate is brutal and the field is professionalized. The traders who survive it treat each launch as a checklist problem: scan the contract, size for a possible zero, take exits mechanically. Edge in memecoins is process, not prediction.

What is the safest way to buy a new Solana memecoin?

Scan the mint first — mint and freeze authority renounced, liquidity locked, deployer history clean — then buy through a non-custodial venue where the keys stay on your device. The scan is the part that filters out mechanical rugs before the market decides anything.

How much liquidity does a memecoin need to be tradeable?

Enough that your intended exit is a small fraction of the pool. Constant-product pools worsen your exit price as your share of the liquidity grows; a position equal to a few percent of pool depth exits noticeably below the marked price. Thin pools punish size in both directions.

Are pump.fun launches safer than other memecoins?

In one narrow way, yes — the bonding-curve program creates tokens with mint and freeze authority already revoked, removing two hard rug vectors by design. Everything else still applies: bundler concentration, deployer track record, and whether liquidity survives migration are all still live risks.

When should I sell a memecoin?

Before you need to. Recover principal early, scale out in tranches on the way up, and treat deployer sells or a liquidity pull as unconditional exits. The sell you plan while calm is the only one that happens — tops are invisible while they print.

Do meme coin scanners work on tokens that just launched?

Yes — the authority fields, liquidity state and holder distribution are on-chain from the first block. What a scan cannot see on a minute-old token is intent; pair it with deployer history and accept that early entries carry the widest error bars.
