Is UNI safe on Ethereum? The series' senior clean sheet

UNI on Ethereum is the series' senior clean sheet — the token that governs the protocol that invented the automated market maker, grading A (100) on our September 26, 2026 read after 1,727 days on the books.

Snapshot 2026-09-26 · Ethereum · ~$25.5M liquidity · ~382,165 holders · 1,727 days live · ~$5.60B cap · ~$5.1M daily volume

Uniswap's UNI token at 0x1f9840a85d5af5bf1d1762f925bdaddc4201f984 grades A (100). The contract checklist is clean end to end: cannot mint, cannot freeze or blacklist, verified source, trust-listed, creator under 0.01%. The single flag is a warn: liquidity thin against the market cap — ~$25.5M of tracked pool against a ~$5.60B valuation. Behind the letter: ~382K holders and nearly five years of continuous operation.

This is the page for the asset that needed the least explaining on the contract side and the most explaining on the market side. UNI's A is complete; what the letter cannot carry is the oddity of a $5.6B governance token whose on-chain venue is a rounding error on its own valuation.

The oldest A on the board

At 1,727 days, UNI is the most senior contract in this series' ethereum coverage — older than every stablecoin leg, older than the wrapped-native receipts, older than every powered D and E the ledger has printed. It earned the letter the boring way: a fixed supply of exactly 1 billion units minted at deployment, no authority retained over the token contract, verified source that has been public since 2020.

The checklist's three live verbs — mint, freeze, owner-rewrite — all read absent. On a governance token that is worth naming precisely, because UNI's value proposition is governance: the token exists to vote on the Uniswap protocol, and the protocol that matters is deliberately separated from the token contract itself. The A-100 here means the token layer is inert even though the thing it governs is the largest live machine in DeFi.

~382K wallets of the airdrop era

The holder count — ~382,165 — is the residue of crypto's most famous distribution: UNI was airdropped to every address that had ever used the Uniswap frontend, a precedent every later governance token copied. Nearly five years on, the count sits between the airdrop-generation giants (ARB's ~2.39M, OP's ~1.37M) and the institution-held assets, which is the shape you would expect for a token that was handed out and then consolidated by holders who cared.

At ~$5.60B of cap the implied mean holding is ~$14.7K — heavier than the dust-weighted airdrop assets by two orders of magnitude. This is a holder base that stayed and sized up, not a residue that drifted.

The thin-pool warn on the deepest name

The warn flag reads paradoxical until you see the pool table: ~$25.5M of tracked depth across five pools — UNI/WETH V3 at ~$18.5M (deployed December 2021), a UNI/ETH V4 pool at ~$11.5M, UNI/USDT V3, USDC/UNI V4, and a 1%-fee WETH pair — against a ~$5.60B cap is ~0.45% coverage. The checklist flags it correctly and the honest reading is two-layered.

First, the understatement: UNI's real market is everywhere — it is listed on every venue that lists anything, and its centralized-exchange books dwarf this DEX slice by orders of magnitude. Second, the standing caution that makes the warn worth printing anyway: a holder whose exit is specifically the on-chain route is sizing against ~$25M regardless of what Binance's order book holds. On a token this big the flag is context, not alarm — it tells you which pool you are actually selling into, and nothing more.

The supply pair with a treasury inside it

~620.9M circulating of exactly ~1,000M total — a 62% ratio that is the token's governance accounting made visible. The ~379M unminted-or-locked difference is the Uniswap treasury and vesting allocations, the war chest the token's holders actually control. On UNI the circ-less-than-total seam is not a burn and not a cliff — it is the governance endowment sitting in plain fields.

That pair is also why the market cap figure (~$5.60B on the ~621M circulating) and the FDV (~$8.0B on the full billion) diverge — the two valuations describe the same token at two points in its distribution program, and both print because the ledger measures them separately rather than guessing which the reader means.

Five pools across two eras

The pool set is itself a small history of its issuer: three Uniswap V3 pools from December 2021 — the month concentrated liquidity matured — alongside two V4 pools from January 2025, the chain's newer AMM generation. UNI trades against WETH, ETH, USDT and USDC simultaneously; the oldest and newest venues on ethereum both carry it, and the ~$5.1M of daily volume splits across all five rather than concentrating in one.

For the checklist's purposes the detail that matters is what is absent: no fantasy-reserve pool, no zero-volume ghost venue, nothing in the tracked set that inflates the depth figure beyond what is actually there. The ~$25.5M is real — it is just small relative to a $5.6B asset, which is the only thing the warn ever claimed.

What a governance token's A actually grades

The calibration paragraph the page owes: UNI's A-100 covers the token contract — the ERC-20 that ballots get cast with — and says nothing about the Uniswap protocol's own contracts, which are a separate, much larger surface. A holder's real exposure is to governance outcomes (including the fee-switch question that has been proposed and deferred for years), not to the token's flag set.

That separation is the deep reason the letter exists: on UNI, the asset is the cleanest possible shell wrapped around the most consequential governance surface in the sector. The checklist can certify the shell; everything interesting happens one layer up.

Where UNI sits in the safety map

Against the batch's other governance tokens the ordering is instructive: UNI A-100 (inert contract, deep history), ARB B-80 (proxy + unassessed controls, widest holder count), OP B-75 (live mint behind a written schedule), LDO C-60 (freeze + owner-rewrite), MKR D-49 (mint + freeze + hidden owner). The checklist's verdict on governance tokens has nothing to do with the quality of the governance — it prices only which powers the contract kept.

UNI sits at the top of that ladder because it kept none. The token that governs the most consequential protocol in DeFi is also the one whose contract can do the least — and the ~1,727 days say the arrangement has held.

The fee-switch shadow over a clean contract

One market note the contract read can't contain but the page owes: UNI's valuation has always carried the "fee switch" question — the deferred governance decision that would route protocol revenue to the token. On the checklist's layer that debate is invisible (the contract is inert either way), but it explains the token's odd profile — a $5.6B governance asset whose whole thesis is a mechanism that has never been switched on. The A-100 certifies the shell; the deferred switch is the reminder that even a perfect contract grade prices nothing about the asset's story.

Holding it, honestly

If you hold UNI you hold the sector's oldest clean governance token: nothing live to flag, ~382K consolidated wallets, a treasury visible in the supply pair, and a market whose real depth lives mostly off the chain this page measures. The A-100 is complete on the layer it covers; the governance surface above it is where the actual risk and reward live.

Frequently asked

Is UNI safe on Ethereum?

On the September 26, 2026 snapshot UNI scores 100/100 (grade A): no mint, no freeze or blacklist, verified source, trust-listed, creator under 0.01%. That grades the token contract — not the price or the protocol it governs.

Can UNI be minted or frozen?

No — both read disabled. Supply is fixed at 1 billion; ~620.9M circulates, the rest is treasury and vesting the governance controls.

How much liquidity does UNI have?

~$25.5M of tracked DEX depth on the 2026-09-26 read against a ~$5.60B cap — the thin-pool warn is printed. UNI's real market is on centralized venues; size an on-chain exit against the pool figure.

What is the difference between UNI's market cap and FDV?

Market cap (~$5.60B) prices the ~620.9M circulating supply; FDV (~$8.0B) prices the full 1 billion. The difference is the unissued treasury and vesting share.

Where is the official UNI contract?
