How much liquidity is enough?
Every other number on a token page describes the game. Liquidity decides whether you can leave the table with your chips. Here's how to size it — against your position, not in the abstract.
Traders read liquidity as a quality badge — big number good, small number bad. That's directionally fine and practically useless, because liquidity isn't a score: it's exit capacity, and capacity only means something relative to the size trying to use it. The right question is never "is the liquidity high?" but "can this pool absorb my exit — and everyone else's — without vaporizing the price?"
What the number actually is
For an AMM pool, quoted liquidity is (roughly) the combined value parked in the pool's two sides. Its practical meaning: how much selling the pool can take per unit of price damage. Sell into a pool and the price you realize degrades continuously — the pool never says no, it just pays you less and less. As a rough intuition for constant-product pools: selling a position worth about one percent of the pool moves the price low single digits; selling ten percent of the pool's value into it craters the price by a fifth or more. Small pools aren't merely risky — they arithmetically cannot pay out what their marked prices imply.
Size it against yourself first
The personal rule is the useful one: keep your position a small fraction of pool depth — think in tenths of a percent for anything you'd want out of quickly and cleanly. Holding a position worth five percent of the pool means your paper gain is a fiction at the exact moment you'd want it to be real; you're no longer trading the token, you're trapped as its market maker. This is also why the same token can be "liquid enough" for one buyer and hopeless for another — the number didn't change, the size did.

The market-cap sanity check
Compare liquidity to market cap. Healthy small-cap tokens tend to carry pool depth that is a meaningful share of their valuation — several percent or more. When a token shows a large market cap over a tiny pool, the valuation is a rumor: it was set by the last small trade and cannot be realized by holders in aggregate even in principle. This mismatch — big cap, thin pool — is the signature of manipulated or simply immature markets, and it's the single most common way portfolio screens overstate what people actually own.
Depth is only half the question. The other half is control: who owns the pool's LP position? Deep liquidity that sits unlocked in the deployer's wallet is deep until one transaction. Depth answers "can I exit into this pool?"; the lock answers "will the pool still be there?" — read them together, always.
Traps in the number
Aggregation: a token's headline liquidity may sum several pools; your trade routes into specific ones, and the depth that matters is where your route actually executes. Rented depth: liquidity that was added recently and isn't locked can leave as fast as it came — age and lock status turn the raw number into information. One-sided reads: after a collapse, a pool can show residual value that is almost entirely the worthless token side; the exit asset is what already left. And volume is not liquidity: a token can print huge volume through a thin pool (wash trading does exactly this) — volume says trades happened, depth says yours can.
The routine
Before buying: read the pool depth; divide your intended position by it and be honest about the percentage; check the liquidity-to-cap ratio for the big-cap-thin-pool mismatch; and confirm the LP is locked or burned. Ten seconds of division is the difference between a gain you can realize and a screenshot.
